Maastricht
Maastricht is the largest city of the province Limburg, with a population of about 122,397 residents. The city is known for the Maastricht Treaty, and it is also known as the birthplace of the euro. Another interesting fact is that the European Union was founded in Maastricht, in 1992.
Maastricht has about 1677 national heritage buildings, which is the second-highest number in the country. Some consider it to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, boasting multiple gothic and medieval castles, buildings, gates, underground caves, museums and more. The historical design of Maastricht (be it language, architecture, etc.) is slightly influenced by French and Spanish occupations.
Full of history and culture, the city boasts two town squares; Vrijthof and Markt. At these locations, people can visit various churches, bars, cafes, restaurants, vendor markets, and the town hall. Some specific highlights are the bookstore in a church (Boekhandel Dominicanen), Hell’s Gate which is part of the city wall, and all the various tunnels and bunkers in Casemates.
